“Aesthetics Of Decay_glitch-y line drawings of sadness,” 2023 1.28 mins The project “Aesthetics of Decay, Design for Dying Electronics” delves into the emotional and psychological loss caused by technological failures. It explores the frustration, anxiety, and feelings of disconnection that arise when our devices break down, resulting in the loss of privacy, data, memories, and a sense of self. In an increasingly digital world, where we project our lives into the virtual domain, these failures become even more devastating.

The project highlights the ongoing struggle with rapidly evolving technologies that quickly become obsolete, forcing individuals into a cycle of constant upgrades. This frustration has given rise to a subset of consumers who respond with defiance, intentionally destroying their devices to challenge planned obsolescence. Additionally, some people personify these devices, attributing human-like qualities to them and even punishing them for their failures.

The artist, [dNASAb], captures this loss and frustration by purposefully damaging and breaking electronics, documenting each step of their deterioration through photography. These images are then layered and transformed using digital effects, resulting in compositions that embody the beauty found within the decay of technology. The finished pieces are translated into physical forms, printed on archival plastics and sculpturally juxtaposed with screens, creating an intricate interplay of the digital and physical realms.

[dNASAb] embraces the paradox of presenting glitchy and broken imagery on the latest high-definition screens, creating a thought-provoking commentary on the clash between technological advancement and the inevitable decay of electronics. The project seeks to explore the unique aesthetic that emerges from the destruction of technology, offering an alternative perspective on the impermanence of our digital tools.

In the artist’s own words, “The clarity of the bubbling video goo, oozing from the cracks and melted holes in the LED screen, jittered glitch-y line drawings of sadness, whilst I killed it.” Through this project, [dNASAb] invites viewers to reflect on the multifaceted relationship we have with our devices and the emotional impact of their inevitable demise.
