Embarking on our Augmented Reality (AR) project, we rigorously tested seven locations to overcome diverse challenges, adapting our artistic vision to each setting’s unique features. Navigating geographical intricacies, such as distances to Google Earth landmarks, posed challenges, notably in beach and dune locations. Unexpected layout changes, like the Miami Beach Convention Center cluster, required tailored solutions involving barrier negotiation and protest backdrop integration. Overcoming challenges at the Perez Museum’s waterfront venue, including a pop-up stage and nighttime nuances, involved strategic landmark identification and unique site-specific sculptures to properly fit the environment. The New Art Dealers [NADA] fair prompted us to elevate the virtual sculptures, transcending constraints for an immersive experience. These experiences highlight our AR project’s adaptability, blending virtual sculpture, spatial audio, and video in a dynamic, educational arts endeavor. The beta-tests yielded crucial insights for our ambitious multi-site, interactive storytelling project, emphasizing AR’s trans-formative potential in revolutionizing artistic expression.

Tips, Best Practices, and Troubleshooting for Augmented Reality Artworks

  1. Device Compatibility:
    • For optimal experience, use IOS devices or most new Android phones with a browser-based interface. Older devices may require a download of the Adobe App.
  2. Loading Times:
    • AR projects are typically under 40 MBs.
    • Loading times vary from seconds to a couple of minutes based on connection speeds.
  3. Geospatial AR Content:
    • Scan buildings and recognizable public structures + sculptures, especially in natural environments and the projects on the beach.
    • Be mindful that geospatial AR content relies on Google Earth data, so changes in surroundings may affect the experience.
  4. Interactivity:
    • Treat the experience as a participatory experiment; explore by walking around or through the artworks.
  5. Recording:
    • Upon launching the scene, find the video recording icon in the top right corner.
    • Capture video with audio, video only, or stills to document your AR experience.
  6. Awareness of Surroundings:
    • The immersive nature of AR works may be disorienting; stay aware of real-world obstacles.
  7. Sharing and Tagging:
    • Share and tag your best captures, videos, selfies, and portraits.
    • Unlock additional AR experiences, content, and personal downloads by participating.
    • Top images will be featured on a documentary page.
  8. Acknowledgment:
    • [dNASAb] acknowledges that these AR projects take place on lands that have been the traditional homelands of the Native nations including the Tequesta, the Calusa, and today the sovereign homelands of the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes of Florida.
    • Thank you for taking the time to engage with these Augmented Reality artworks.

_| AR_TVBuddha Beta Test_| Synopsis |_

The “AR_TVBuddha” project by [dNASAb] underwent beta-tests; in preparation for the 50th anniversary of Nam June Paik’s groundbreaking “TV Buddha” (1974) video sculpture, during Miami Art Week/Art Basel 23′. The tests showcased seven geospatial, location-based interactive storytelling experiences, an interactive augmented reality postcard, and the integration of the AR_TVBuddha remixed in the studio to interact with physical TV Buddha sculptures. The studio-based installation and overall project featured a blend of Artificial Intelligence, digital and analog video, feedback and effects, video projections, physical sculptures extruded into a 4th dimension, and augmented reality sculptures spanning various realms (IRL, Phygital, Digital, Analog, Virtual, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence,Meta AF).

The beta-tests provided valuable insights for deploying a large, location-based, conceptual Augmented Reality project, enhancing the interactivity of the experiences. Remixing Nam June Paik’s project served as an homage to his unparalleled innovation, fostering continuous reflection on the relevance and evolution of concepts and technologies in a forward-thinking manner. This project marked the first direct and collaborative homage to an artist, aiming to reinvent Paik’s iconic work by addressing contemporary issues of the “NOW” on its 50th anniversary.

The augmented reality sculptures transcended reality, existing in a fourth dimension, drifting into new territories, and straddling both time and space. They functioned as an investigation into liminal interior spaces, ephemeral storytelling, and portals of digital enlightenment. The AR_TVBuddha emerged as a talisman, guiding viewers on a journey through the augmented and reinvented realms of one of the greatest artist “future-casters” of all time, Nam June Paik.”
